From 2010 to 2021, Johannes was CEO of E.ON SE, driving a landmark transformation, splitting the company into renewables- and infrastructure-led businesses, spinning off Uniper in 2016, and re-focusing E.ON on energy networks and retail to serve 50 million customers across Europe.

Earlier, he had risen through legal, financial, operational, and executive ranks across E.ON and its predecessors, including roles as CFO, COO, and Deputy CEO.

Beyond E.ON, he has chaired and shaped European energy governance bodies as President of Eurelectric (2013-2015) and European Vice-Chair of the World Energy Council (2006-2012). He was German Honorary Consul General until 2020. His non-executive experience also includes board tenures at Deutsche Bank (2008-2018) and Salzgitter AG (2006-2016).
