Overview

Andy is an experienced insurance and financial services leader who spent the last 25 years of his executive career as CEO of four different companies in the sector, including Towergate, Folgate, AXA Insurance UK and what is now Aviva UK General Insurance. At Towergate he led the completion of around 150 acquisitions, building the business into the largest independent insurance intermediary in Europe and ultimately selling it to private equity in 2010.

Alongside his executive roles, Andy has established himself as an experienced Independent Non-Executive Director and Chair. He holds a portfolio of Chair and Non-Executive roles in the software, utility and insurance sectors, including Chair of Amber River, and he recently stepped down as Chair of Brown & Brown (Europe) and Hood Group. He is also an active angel investor in more than 20 start-ups. He was previously Chair of Merryck, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau and the British Insurance Brokers’ Association, and served as President of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Andy has been a mentor since 2012, working with private equity partnerships and CEOs and C-suite executives in FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 organisations. His assignments have included CEO succession preparation, C-suite transformation and the development of Executive Committee and senior leadership teams. His philosophy is that all leaders are capable of a progressive and permanent shift in their own capability – and that of their teams – provided they are willing to make that shift. He believes performance improvement begins with understanding the positive capabilities of the individual, the team and the organisation, and then building on those strengths to stretch ambition and broaden perspective.

Known for his open, direct and thoughtful style, Andy works in a way that is trusting but always challenging, providing honest and constructive feedback. He sees inclusion, diversity and followership as critical to better decision-making and sustainable performance. He helps leaders become more aware of their own impact and of the systems around them, supporting them to seek out concrete performance and development outcomes. He is convinced that people at all levels have the potential to deliver more, better and faster – and, in doing so, to find greater meaning and fulfilment in their own lives and the lives of those they influence.

Andy brings deep cross-sector expertise in:

• Insurance & financial services – leading large, complex insurance businesses, driving growth, integration and performance in highly competitive markets.

• Private equity, M&A & value creation – building acquisitive platforms, completing extensive buy-and-build programmes and working closely with PE sponsors in the UK and internationally.

• Board leadership & governance – chairing and serving on boards and industry bodies, shaping strategy, risk and stakeholder engagement across multiple sectors.

An alumnus of Wharton Business School, Ashridge Executive Education and Saïd Business School, he holds a Master’s degree in Coaching and Mentoring Practice from Oxford Brookes University. He has also been a Visiting Professor at Bayes Business School and is a qualified supervisor of coaching.

Meet the Mentors

The Original Mentor

Mentoring has its roots in one of the oldest leadership stories. In Homer’s Odyssey, Mentor was entrusted with guiding the young Telemachus while Odysseus was away — not by directing him, but by offering judgement, perspective and wisdom born of experience. This enduring idea of counsel, grounded in trust rather than instruction, remains the essence of mentoring today.

That same tradition sits at the heart of Global Mentors Group today.

We exist to provide leaders with access to seasoned peers who have walked the path before them, offering the clarity, judgement and discretion required to lead at the highest level.
