Overview

Richard Dammery is a highly respected governance leader with an extensive executive and non-executive career spanning telecommunications, retail, legal services, technology, and infrastructure. He currently serves as Independent Non-Executive Director, Australia Post and Salta Properties; Chair, The Australian Ballet; and Senior Independent Adviser through his firm, Emerald Hill Associates, advising boards on governance and organisational leadership.

Richard’s executive career began in corporate law before progressing into senior leadership roles at major telecommunications businesses, including Telecom Corporation of New Zealand and AAPT, where he led large-scale infrastructure investment and network transformation programmes. He later held two of Australia’s most senior corporate legal and governance roles as General Counsel and Company Secretary, Coles Group, and Chief Legal Officer and Senior Company Secretary, Woolworths Group. At Woolworths, he was a member of the Executive Committee and an active participant in Board and Committee meetings during periods of transformation and intense governance scrutiny. Earlier experience also included six years as Partner in Mergers & Acquisitions at Minter Ellison, advising on some of the largest corporate and government transactions in the country.

Since transitioning to a non-executive career, Richard has chaired and served on boards across ASX-listed, founder-led, and private equity-backed organisations. He was a Non-Executive Director and later Chair, WiseTech Global, steering the business through significant growth as its market capitalisation increased from approximately AUD 14bn to AUD 40bn, while guiding its transition to enhanced governance practices. He has also supported companies such as Aussie Broadband through its listing journey and Nexus Day Hospitals through major expansion under infrastructure ownership.

Richard brings deep cross-sector expertise in:

• Telecommunications & digital infrastructure – driving investment and transformation in complex, regulated environments

• Retail & consumer services – leading governance and legal functions at scale for listed companies

• Professional services & legal advisory – advising on high-value corporate transactions and regulatory frameworks

• Board-level governance & organisational leadership – shaping strategy and oversight for diversified, high-growth companies

He holds a Master of Laws and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Melbourne, and has completed advanced governance programmes at the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Harvard Business School.

Meet the Mentors

The Original Mentor

Mentoring has its roots in one of the oldest leadership stories. In Homer’s Odyssey, Mentor was entrusted with guiding the young Telemachus while Odysseus was away — not by directing him, but by offering judgement, perspective and wisdom born of experience. This enduring idea of counsel, grounded in trust rather than instruction, remains the essence of mentoring today.

That same tradition sits at the heart of Global Mentors Group today.

We exist to provide leaders with access to seasoned peers who have walked the path before them, offering the clarity, judgement and discretion required to lead at the highest level.
