Overview

Scott St John is a New Zealander with a broad Australasian governance portfolio, shaped by a 30-year career in financial services and capital markets. He is known for his ability to understand complex stakeholder landscapes and to communicate clearly and constructively with owners, founders, regulators and wider stakeholders. His deep knowledge of financial markets, coupled with a strong interest in innovation, allows him to bring a focused and balanced perspective to strategic decision-making and governance.

Scott began his career as an auditor before moving into equity research, an early shift that set the course for his long association with investment banking and markets. In 1993 he joined the firm now known as Jarden, where he worked across virtually every part of the business before spending his final 15 years as CEO, stepping down in 2017. Under his leadership Jarden incubated several onshore and offshore businesses that grew into substantial enterprises in their own right, reinforcing his experience in growth, diversification and founder-style environments.

During his tenure at Jarden, Scott was appointed to the Council of the University of Auckland, a role that subsequently led to his appointment as Chancellor and became a springboard for his wider governance career. His first major commercial governance role was as a Director and ultimately Chair of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, giving him exposure to a global, innovation-led healthcare business. He was also appointed as an independent director to the board of farmer-owned dairy co-operative Fonterra, adding experience in large-scale, export-driven primary industries and complex co-operative ownership structures.

Scott’s current roles include Chair of Mercury NZ (electricity), Chair of ANZ New Zealand, Director of ANZ Group, and Director of the NEXT Foundation, which focuses on environment and education. He is also involved with a range of commercial and philanthropic entities, reflecting his interest in applying his skills to both economic and societal outcomes.

Scott brings deep cross-sector expertise in:

• Financial services & capital markets – leading an investment bank across multiple cycles, incubating new ventures and serving on major banking group boards.

• Governance & board leadership – chairing and serving on listed company and co-operative boards across energy, healthcare, dairy and education.

• Stakeholder strategy & founder-led enterprises – working closely with owners, founders and diverse stakeholder groups to align expectations and deliver sustainable outcomes.

• Innovation, growth & philanthropy – supporting innovation-driven businesses and contributing to environmental and educational initiatives through foundations and community roles.

Scott believes strongly in understanding each organisation’s full stakeholder context and in delivering for all parties over the long term. He is valued by boards and executives for his measured judgement, capital markets fluency and ability to balance performance, innovation and responsibility.

Meet the Mentors

The Original Mentor

Mentoring has its roots in one of the oldest leadership stories. In Homer’s Odyssey, Mentor was entrusted with guiding the young Telemachus while Odysseus was away — not by directing him, but by offering judgement, perspective and wisdom born of experience. This enduring idea of counsel, grounded in trust rather than instruction, remains the essence of mentoring today.

That same tradition sits at the heart of Global Mentors Group today.

We exist to provide leaders with access to seasoned peers who have walked the path before them, offering the clarity, judgement and discretion required to lead at the highest level.
